There is a lot of really idiosyncratic English items. Mottoware, or motto ware, Devon ware, Torquay ware or Devon pottery is such a classification. The area of England in the South called Devon, especially surrounding the coastal town of Torquay yielded red clay in the early 1800s the area became famous for. The clay and it's imaginitive uses a sprouted a pottery industry that managed to have remnants survive into the early 1960s. The pottery falls into several classifications and collecting areas, but most have sgraphito, scraffito or carved sayings through the underglaze dine before the final firing. Funny, sentimental, outrageous and humorous the mottos or sayings are great fun and a collecting area of their own.
There is a Torquay Pottery Collector's Society in England that we are members of that has done a great job of tracking down the history of the potteries, designers and artisans. They have annual conventions but we have never managed to be in the country at the right time! Ah well.
This particular example I just listed at Time Was Antiques is unusual because of it's rare flat cup shape...which I am calling by the modern nomer of a latte shape. Cool! The design in the traditional cottage design and is all hand thrown, desorated and painted. A real cottage industry.

Unusual Shelley China Queen Elizabeth II Teacup and Sequim Lavender Festival
My favorite time of year around here...Sequim Lavender Festival. Our 14th annual this year. Street fair, live music, food court, lavender farm tours, you name it...it's here. Even an impromptu antique fair at a local business parking lot. How cool is that!~!
You can learn more at the lavender festival website: www.lavenderfestival.com
We went to the street fair etc tomorrow and more things to do today including Jazz In The Alley. Too fun!!
The sepia photo of the queen is on many of the commemoratives both from Shelley and others. The reason is there are a number of designs/photos that are approved by the queen to be used and companies draw from those designs for their items.
What's different about this cup and saucer is the Ripon shape which was not the one usually used for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, and also the addition of the gold leaf border. The Ripon set often comes with the burnished 22 kt gold foot , trim and handle which this set has. The color is actually a pale yellow which didn't photograph well. All together a special find. I LOVE it!

I added this to Time Was Antiques
recently and was thrilled when I found it. Shelley China, England is my favorite manufacturer and I have been dealing in Shelley for 20 years. I have seen a lot of British Royal Commemorative cups and saucers, but I have never had one just like this. I LOVE discovering new items from wonderful Shelley. The sepia photo of the queen is on many of the commemoratives both from Shelley and others. I LOVE this teacup trio by Royal Standard. Can you just see yourself sipping your Earl Grey from this cup with your shortbread on the plate in front of you? Elegance or what???
As a longtime collector and dealer in teacups at Time Was Antiques I have seen a lot and this is one of my favorites. We have sold a lot of teacups this year for holiday gifts. Have you noticed how tea is becoming a popular drink lately? We are recognizing the importance of this wonderful drink and making it a pastime as well as a refreshment again. Tea also has great antioxidant properties and you would not believe how many varieties and blends.
We have 2 opportunities for Christmas teas in our area and I'll be attending with joy!!! Check your local papers and see if there are any near you.
One of the nice tea merchants close to us because we live 10 miles from the ferry to Victoria, BC Canada is Murchies which is a great place in Victoria for a cuppa and a bun as well as a stop to buy tea to take home.
