Tuesday Cuppa Tea, Aesthetic Transfer Teacup, Knife Rests

Hello and welcome to Tuesday Cuppa Tea that I am joining with host Antiques And Teacups.  I am also joining some other tea related blog parties at the bottom of the post.

Today I wanted to share brown transferware again because it is Thanksgiving week. I found that I had this Aesthetic Movement child's transferware cup and saucer with a motif of birds as well as a child with their dog.

The Aesthetic Movement is the name applied to designs with a natural world dynamic, often with framed vignettes and natural subjects. It is usually called English Arts and Crafts in England, And Aesthetic movement in America. This particular cup and saucer was made by Charles Allerton, England between 1859-1870s when the style changed and the designs went out of fashion. I love the child and dog!

As I was leafing through Victoria magazines of old, I came upon an article about knife rests which I thought appropriate for a Thanksgiving week.

Victorians were famous for embellishing everything. The dining table was a great source of their creativity as well as a source of wonder for us now because of the many specialized table items they invented. Not all Victorian gadgets have survived with a following to today, but knife rests have.

Designed as a practical solution to keep tablecloths clean when they were hand laudered, knife rests held your knife or a carving set up off the cloth as the dishes were changed for the many courses or removes of a formal dinner. But they weren't boring! Knife rests have been made out of almost every material imaginable from solid gold to wood, and everything in between. The range from the simple to the incredible. I have added a few from our current stock at Time Was Antiques.

One of the fun things is that they have made a comeback at dinner tables over the last 20 years. We used to sell them only to collectors, but we have been selling them to people who want to use them at their dinner table for a novel table setting. We have even sent several sets on their way to restaurants in New York and Los Angeles, to be used at sommelier tables, which we think is quite fun.  So don't forget that small items can make a design statement at your Thanksgiving dinner, or at any meal from breakfast to dinner to tea! Good things do come in small packages!

For more info on any other the items at Time Was Antiques, just click on the photos.

Enjoy the other blog parties below and many others and don't forget to have a cup of tea with a friend. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. We are truly a blessed people!

Fall Fun Coupon 15% Off and Antique Clay Pipe Bowls

Hi there. Just wanted to let you know that we are having a FALL FUN 15% off promotion at Time Was Antiques with coupon code 018.  Celebrating the changing season!  Just click the pumpkins above!

And for something a little different, I wanted to share the photos of some antique clay pipe bowls that I recently sold to a man who is a Civil War enactor and educator who is always looking for interesting items dating up to the civil war period of 1850. I had acquired a lot of antique pipe bowls and a few pipe stems on one of my English buying trips and he was excited to get them. He is also a potter and is planning to try making one so he can demonstrate at one of his education times on a battlefield. The following date from 1780-1860:

This is a glazed pipe bowl with a corroded copper ring left on it

This pipe bowl is of glazed ceramic and features a hand painted design of a sheep or deer

This is my favorite as it is a figural clay pipe bowl that is shaped like a horse's hoof.

This set is quite fun. There is an unusual layered or marbled clay pipe. The one with the partial stem has an embossed leaf design along the front and back and the bottom one has a scratched in or scgraphito bird design.

This set shows different colored clays and molding techniques and how small the hole in a pipe stem often was.

This set included 2 with anchors embossed on them which was a very popular design around the time of the Battle Of Trafalgar in the early 1800s.

So...that's my tale of the pipes. Maybe you'll see them or others the next time you visit a Civil War enactment camp and see an educator at work! My small contributuin to furthering historical knowledge!

Have a great day and have a cuppa with a friend. We are off for a day out today.
Cheers!

Figural Dolphin Antique English Ring Holder

I absolutely love this figural dolphin antique English ring holder. Ring holders have been in use since rings were around...800 years perhaps? And ring holders have ranged from the pure practical to an elegant statement of the prevailing tastes of the period. This great ring holder is fashioned after a renaissance or elizabethan dolphin...I've seen it's twin on an old map when the explorers expected to fall off the end of the flat world! The detail is really terrific and although made in England 1920-1930s, it remembers an earlier and more decorative period. Things were about to change even more with the advent of art deco and the modern taste when this poor dolphin design would definitely be OUT!

You can see more about the dolphin ring holder at Time Was Antiques.

We are still running our FRESH START free shipping on orders over $25.00 with the code listed on the website. We all need a little after-the-holidays boost, don't we?

Today is Epiphany or Twelfth Night, the night the e wisemen or magis reached the Christ child and is traditionally the end of the Christmas season. We have our outdoor Christmas lights on tonight for the last time...they're coming down tomorrow. Then everything will look bare and dull.

But then we get to look forward to Valentine's Day, presidential holidays and generally the hope of spring to come.

Have a great day tomorrow (while we are taking down the lights) and have a cuppa tea for me!

I LOVE good vintage costume jewelry and this is a great example. This figural brooch or pin was made in the 1950s by Coro, USA and is signed. The thistle has a seed pearl head and enamel leaves and is really fab!!! I was so excited when I found it at an estate sale. Cool!!!!

The brooch or pin is 3 inches high by 2 inches wide by .5 inch deep and is in SUPER condition.
To see more and bigger photos of the pin go to our website, Time Was Antiques, at this clickable link: http://pages.timewasantiques.net/8824/PictPage/3923675776.html

It's another drop dead gorgeous day here on the Olympic Peninsula...small wisps of autumn mist, many colors of turning leaves and although only 40s this morning will be in the 60s later today. I love taking an afternoon walk and seeing the changing colors.

Tonight we are going to the Port Angeles Community Players production of Rehearsal For Murder which will be fun.

Have a gret day and get out to enjoy the autumn...it'll be gone fast!
